magic wand The Original Magic Wand has long been considered the Cadillac of strong vibrators, and it went relatively unchanged since it hit the US market in the late 1960s. The classic design has been recommend far and wide for all people who love vibration, and especially those with vulvas who struggle to orgasm without intense, prolonged stimulation. It has even been recommended for those with significant genital scarring from genital surgery and forced clitoral removal. It used to be called the Hitachi Magic Wand, but recently Hitachi sold it to Vibratex, and it is now called the Original Magic Wand, or just the Magic Wand for short. When Hitachi transferred the product to Vibratex we all held our breath, terrified that it might lose its magic. However, Vibratex did us proud with some mild, positive improvements to the original design. And now, they’ve introduced a cordless version which I promptly purchased from Secret Pleasures in Washington, DC in the name of SCIENCE to review for you!

Wand vibrators are generally intended for external stimulation, from whole body massage to genital massage, to vibrating against insertable toys like dildos to give them some rumble. They’re often, but not always, stronger toys with a long handle that gives some good reach. Some owners enjoy adding them to intercourse for more genital stimulation between partners, for example they can be used to stimulate the clitoris during positions like missionary, spooning, or doggy style.

rechargeable magic wand The Rechargeable Magic Wand comes with three buttons (power, vibration, and pattern), instructions, and a detachable cord. It’s a sizable toy at just over a foot in length and 1lb 5oz in weight. There are four power levels and four patterns of vibration, which can be adjusted independently of each other. The body of the toy is hard plastic, and the head is now silicone. This makes it much easier and more effective to clean the head, however it cannot be readily removed. Pleasantly small blue and green lights guide the user in knowing what intensity or vibration pattern is happening. It has a small, pleasant light when charging, too. It did not light up my room when any of its little lights were on, but I could see the settings easily.

This toy does feature an auto-shut off after 20 minutes which I’ll glow about in a moment. My toy took about 3 hours to charge, as advertised, and promises to run for about 3 hours. I did not get a chance to wear it out it, but it’s going strong on its first charge so far!

The first question everyone wants to know is whether it’s as strong as the predecessor. The corded Original Magic Wand vibrates at two settings: 5,000 and 6,000 rotations per minute (RPM). The cordless Magic Wand vibrates even harder at the top two settings! The four settings are 2700, 3800, 5400, and 6300 RPM. Many reviewers have noted that it felt like quite a jump between each setting, and I would agree, especially between 1 & 2 and 2 & 3. (This was not a problem for me when I reviewed it, but I figured I should point it out.)  I found the vibrations to be hearty and strong, giving the same “shiver my timbers” effect as my old, original Hitachi wand that I’ve had for over a decade. It felt ever so slightly less rumbly, but this may also have been because it was less heavy and easier to maneuver. I was wonderfully happy to discover that it did not tire or numb my hand, as the handle vibrates much less, it’s lighter, and I didn’t have to angle it oddly to work with a cord. It can be used while plugged in, but I detached the cord for testing.

The lighter weight, increased settings options, vibrating silicone head, and cordless use are the main selling points of this toy over the Original Magic Wand. For those who like to attend sex parties, or just have a lack of outlets where they want to use their toys, it’s wonderful to not need to be within 6-7 feet of an electrical outlet. However, this toy is still NOT waterproof and should not be used in the bath. If you’re interested in that function, you might try the Jimmy Jane Iconic Wand.

As I mentioned earlier, it does shut off after 20 minutes. While some people may find this a mild annoyance, I consider it a great benefit of the product. These wands can heat up if left on for a long time, and especially if trapped under blankets or people (which the directions firmly warm against, by the way). I have heard more stories than one might imagine about people who have fallen asleep afterward and then suffered burns from laying on their toy. For those who use sleeping medications, have limited sensation in their lower body, or just sleep very soundly this 20 minute shut off function can be a lifesaver. For the rest of us, it takes under a second to tap the power button and continue. However, due to the strength of this toy, many users will never have it on for 20 straight minutes, anyway.

Both Magic Wand vibrators are wonderfully powerful, dependable, and dynamic toys. The price point of the cordless magic wand is higher than the original, however the freedom and navigability made it very worthwhile for this reviewer.
